The pilot catches, then drops when you release the knob. That usually points at the thermopile. It makes the small current that holds the gas valve open. Soot or corrosion weakens it. Plain age does too. Sometimes the pilot flame has drifted off the probe. A partly blocked pilot orifice does the same thing. Spiders nest in pilot tubing too. The odorant in natural gas attracts them.

Ignition is only half the calls. The rest are flame quality. Slumped, ash-fouled logs sitting over burner ports make soot. Misaligned logs blacken glass quickly. On sealed direct-vent units, a tired glass gasket changes how the fire burns. Log placement gets checked against the maker's diagram, not by eye.

Local wrinkle: many gas log sets here were retrofitted into 1960s–80s masonry boxes with clay flue tile. Those need a clear flue and a proper damper stop. Rarely-used flues collect animal nests. During Santa Ana conditions, wind-affected flues push smoke and odor back into the room.

Factory-built zero-clearance fireboxes in 1990s–2000s tract neighborhoods fail differently. Refractory panels crack. Chase covers rust and stain stucco. Spark arrestor caps go missing.
